For a long time (too long!) I asked myself what type of Romance novel would I want to write when I wrote one. There are a ton of different types of romance novels: Paranormal Romance, New Adult Romance, Young Adult Romance, Erotic Romance, Sweet Romance, etc., etc., etc.
I decided to write a book that had the same feeling as Nora Roberts, who is one of my favorite Romance Book writers. Nora Roberts has been a favorite author of mine for many years and I love her collections that have a slight (but not too hard core) paranormal flavor. So that is what I started trying to write about.
Then I discovered Colleen Hoover books. Back the truck up and start again! Colleen Hoover books are dripping with emotion, oozing with angst and overflowing with desires that make me hurt for her characters in a way I never thought I could. And that is just Colleen’s teenage boy characters. Her female characters are even more dramatic.
I pride myself as being a pretty creative person, but, I’m not sure I can write like that (yet.)
There is also a part of me that is a pretty big dreamer. Nicholas Sparks books aren’t as over the top with emotion as Colleen Hover books, but they sure make good movies! Could I dare try writing a book with the same widespread appeal as a Nicholas Sparks one? Would Hotness (AKA my boyfriend) actually go to a theater to see a movie made from one of my books if it had the same feeling as a Nicholas Sparks book?
Probably not, but he would watch it at Netflix. He’s good about that. As long as I have plenty of beer for him.
So for now, my path to success as a Romance writer is all my own. I thank the brilliant writers who inspire me and look forward to experiencing the journey.
